The UK is committed to becoming the world’s most technologically advanced global financial centre. This ambition is being realised through groundbreaking efforts in technological innovation across financial services, with a strong focus on the digitalisation of markets, the future of payments, and the strategic adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data.
A cornerstone of this technological drive was announced on 15 July 2025, as part of the wider “Leeds Reforms”. On this date, the government, under the leadership of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, formally launched its comprehensive Wholesale Financial Markets Digital Strategy (WFMDS). This strategy sets out a clear vision to optimise, transform and dgitise UK wholesale markets by leveraging cutting-edge technologies like Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), AI, and quantum computing. Further cementing this commitment, the Chancellor also issued a new remit letter to the Bank of England’s Financial Market Infrastructure Committee (FMIC), encouraging greater innovation within financial markets. Additionally, an update on the proposed Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) pilot was published, alongside the final report from the UK Digitisation Taskforce, outlining plans for dematerialisation and T+1 settlement. These concerted efforts highlight the UK’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of digital innovation, solidifying its reputation as a forward-thinking global financial hub.
